Greg Scapillato currently serves as a member of the music faculty at Northbrook District 28 (IL), designated as a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. He conducts the Wind Ensemble, jazz band, and teaches band lessons for grades 4-8. The students in the NBJH Wind Ensemble, under Mr. Scapillato’s direction, have benefitted from impactful performance experiences, including: joint concerts with other middle school bands; service-based performances such as Veterans’ Day Ceremonies; sharing the stage with outstanding community and brass bands, such as Northshore Concert Band and Chicago Brass Band. Mr. Scapillato initiated the biennial NBJH Bands Alumni Concert to connect current NBJH band students to the life-long love of music performance. This special event regularly hosts graduates from across a 30+ year span, and was recognized in 2019 with a Gold designation in Music for All’s Advocacy in Action Awards.
In addition to his music-related pursuits, Mr. Scapillato actively hones his technology “chops", especially pertaining to the classroom. He is proud to have been a Specialist with Apple, Inc. for several years, making new technology accessible to individuals with a wide range of expertise. He regularly serves on various District 28 committees and initiatives related to technology integration in the classroom, as well as standards-based grading.
Mr. Scapillato holds degrees from St. Norbert College, Western Illinois University, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with additional graduate coursework through VanderCook College of Music. He is a member of the Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Music Education Association, and has been inducted into the American School Band Directors’ Association.
With the support of voters in Arlington Heights School District 25, Mr. Scapillato joined the school board in April, 2021. He is currently serving as Board President.
In 2017, Mr. Scapillato received the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator award. He is honored to serve on a select advisory team for Be Part of the Music (bepartofthemusic.org), an organization that helps music programs improve their recruitment and retention efforts. In this role, he contributes to various projects and initiatives, including authoring content for the Parent Advocacy Email program. He has taught graduate coursework through the MECA program at VanderCook College of Music. Mr. Scapillato is one of the Concert Band Division Coordinators for the Music for All Summer Symposium, held each summer on the campus of Ball State University.
