The Illinois State Board of Education is in the process of revamping the school accountability system. While there are aspects of the system that need our attention, one change is very concerning. In their latest draft, ISBE is proposing removing the Fine Arts Indicator from the school report card.
By removing the Fine Arts Indicator, we risk sending a message that arts education is expendable. This not only devalues the arts, potentially leading to funding cuts and fewer opportunities for students. Without accountability, schools might focus solely on standardized tests over creative development, widening the gap between those who have access to arts education and those who don't.
The arts are more than just an elective; they are a catalyst for academic and personal growth. Research shows that arts participation boosts critical thinking, creativity, and even performance in core subjects. They nurture social-emotional skills, mental health, and foster student engagement.
Parents and communities overwhelmingly value arts education. They understand that it produces well-rounded, engaged citizens. Keeping these indicators visible ensures transparency and empowers families to make informed choices about their children's education.
Here’s the good news: the proposed changes are still in draft form, and you can take action to advocate to retain the Fine Arts Indicator.
I’ve collaborated with ILMEA to collect background information and develop advocacy resources. There is an Advocacy Toolkit available, with phone/email scripts, talking points, and more.
Please take action and advocate to keep the Fine Arts Indicator on the Illinois school report card!
